William Marriner-

Marriner "tall, large framed man of great physical strength.  He was a tavern keeper known even to Washington as a jovial host"  A private in NJ regiment of Lord Stirling.  Saw some service, but left army and established a tavern hard by the banks of the Raritan River.  Became the rendezvous of whaleboatmen and an informal clearing house for information brought in by patriot spies and informers.

He planned and conducted raids across NY bay.  "One of his first and most daring forays on June 11 1777 a raid on Long Island capturing Tory's for prisoner exchanges.  Another, on April 18, 1780 Marriner with nine men in the whaleboat captured a Brig and a schooner and held fifty prisoners which he carried through Cranberry Inlet into Toms River.

In April 1778  The American Privateer "Blacksnake" had been captured by the British.  With 9 men Marriner set out in a whale boat, retook the `Blacksnake" put her to sea.  With her he encountered a British Ship `Morning Star' with 6 swivel guns and 33 men.  After a fight, in which the brits lost 3 and had 5 wounded, they surrendered and Marriner took both prizes to LEH.  Salter and SW p, 39.  LM  Sloop Enterprise  August 18, 1778
